Mourica Sentine, Montclair State University Student Intern
This internship also allows me to have conversations with people that I may never have met otherwise. Our MESH guests are an extremely intelligent group of people with amazing personalities and imaginations. Some stories I know are made up, but others I can tell are real; they have lived the words they now speak. The experience at MESH has been a great learning tool for me; it has taught me some great life lessons. Two of the most important things that I have learned from my internship are that, I should never for a second think that I cannot be in the same shoes as my guest, and homelessness does not just mean a lack of food, clothing or shelter, it comes in many other forms. Many of our guests suffer from emotional homelessness. They have been in their current situations for so long that they no longer know how to communicate with the outside world. They create and live in their own realities and it takes a few conversations for them to feel like they trust you enough to tell you their “real” names and begin to tell their story.
I would not trade this internship experience, because it has given me the opportunity to step into a completely different world. If you can, imagine being amongst a group of people where no one is consumed, but appreciative and grateful for the smallest act of kindness such as a glass of water. When they say “Thank You” I know that they are thanking me for a myriad of things that I will never even begin to understand. That is what MESH has given to me.
