Reverend Wade Renn

MESH began as an ad hoc organization in the fall of 2005. The Reverend Canon Wade Renn, an Episcopal Priest and former Interim Pastor of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church became involved with the guests at Toni’s Kitchen, a ministry of St. Luke’s Church. It was during this time that he became aware of the plight of the homeless as winter approached. As he toured Montclair, he noticed where some people slept – huddled in doorways, curled up on benches and vulnerable to the harsh winter elements. That year, MESH handed out sleeping bags to Montclair’s most needy people who were “roughing it” outdoors. The following year winter overnight shelter space was provided for the homeless at Montclair’s Central Presbyterian Church and the next year at St. John’s Episcopal Church. At the latter evening meals began to be served by the people of St. Paul’s Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Gwen Parker-Ames.

From this introduction of meals to the respite ministry grew a program where evening meals were provided by various congregations on a rotation basis. These congregations became known as MESH “Partners”.

In addition, a “Shower Ministry” was begun, first at Central Presbyterian Church and then at The Salvation Army’s new building. It continues to this day at The Salvation Army in coordination with their staff. Over the years this has been managed by MESH volunteers, who have helped to facilitate donations of underwear and socks.

In July 2011, MESH incorporated in the state of New Jersey and was granted 501(c) (3) tax-exempt status as a charitable, not-for-profit corporation by the Internal Revenue Service.

Under the leadership of Reverend Renn and a newly formed Board of Directors, Dr. Gwen Parker-Ames was appointed Executive Director and has served faithfully giving generously both of
her time and talent to move the organization forward.

In 2012, MESH began its official partnership with local churches, synagogues and other community members to provide a nutritious evening meal, 6 days a week, to Montclair's most needy. MESH continues to provide overnight respite during extreme winter weather.

With confidence in the new leadership of MESH and its vision for the future built soundly on its past, Reverend Renn stepped down from his role as President of the MESH Board in spring 2012. He continued to serve as President Emeritus.

In the summer of 2020 the MESH Board elected Reverend Renn to once again serve as President.

MESH continues to pursue its mission as a local, faith-based organization dedicated to engaging Montclair in providing basic and essential services to our most vulnerable population.

MESH is grateful for the generosity of its donors and community partners. Our efforts depend on the support of people like you. Please consider joining us in our mission to help those adults and families who are most vulnerable in our community. Learn more about Ways to Give.
